2010-2011 EvoS Small Grant Program

EvoS Small Grants fund research in evolutionary studies at Binghamton University. Faculty and graduate student researchers at BU are eligible to submit proposals for amounts up to $2500.

Proposal Deadline

Proposals are due November 15, 2010. Proposals must be submitted as an email attachment to evos@binghamton.edu with subject “2010-2011 EvoS Small Grant Proposal”. Proposals received after 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on November 15, 2010 will not be considered.

All recipients of EvoS Small Grants awarded during the 2009-2010 period may apply but must also submit a final report for the 2009-2010 grant. See details below.

Proposal Format

Proposals should address the following points:

  1. Researcher name, affiliation, and email address. (If multiple researchers are named, the principal investigator should be identified. The principal investigator must be faculty or graduate student at BU.)
  2. Project title.
  3. Project description. Objectives of the proposed research should be identified. An evolutionary perspective is essential! Relevant prior work and future plans may be described. (Descriptions should be detailed but concise; one or two pages is sufficient.)
  4. Budget. State the amount requested (up to $2500) and how it will be used, in as much detail as presently possible. Also provide a minimum viable budget: the minimum amount needed, if less than the total requested, to proceed with the proposed research.

Proposals may be submitted in any common file format (e.g. Word, PDF).

Decision Process

A selection committee convened by EvoS director David Sloan Wilson will review the proposals, decide which to fund, and decide the amount of each award (not less than the minimum viable budget). The selection committee will determine the number of grants awarded; the selection process will be competitive. Committee members may submit proposals but will not participate in evaluation of any proposals in which they are named.

Decision Deadline

The selection committee’s decisions will be announced on December 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified by email of the outcome. A list of awards (project titles and associated researchers) will subsequently be posted on this web site.

Awarded Funds

Grant recipients will work with EvoS coordinator Jim DeVona to access awarded funds. Funds will be available from the date of announcement until the grant ends on June 1, 2011 August 31, 2011. Awarded funds unspent by that date will be reabsorbed by EvoS.

Recipient Obligations

Grant recipients or their representatives are expected to present a poster and/or talk about the funded research at an EvoS symposium to be held on campus in early May, 2011 (date and details TBD) on August 26, 2011.

A final report documenting the state of the funded research is due June 1, 2011 August 31, 2011.

Final Report Format

The final report due at the conclusion of the EvoS Small Grant cycle should address the following points:

  1. Brief project overview (review proposal)
  2. Project results or status
  3. Future plans for this research
  4. List of any related publications in preparation or in press
  5. Efforts to obtain future funding

As with proposals, final reports should be detailed but concise. A few pages at most should be sufficient. Final reports may be submitted in any common file format.

Notes for 2009-2010 EvoS Small Grant Recipients

Previous EvoS Small Grant recipients should submit a final report by November 15, 2010. Final reports should be formatted as described above and sent as an email attachment to evos@binghamton.edu with subject “2009-2010 EvoS Small Grant Final Report”. If you do not submit a final report you will not be eligible to apply for a 2010-2011 grant and any funds remaining in your 2009-2010 grant will be reabsorbed by EvoS.

Otherwise, any funds remaining in your 2009-2010 grant will remain available until June 1, 2011. A remaining balance does not influence your eligibility to apply for a new grant, but may be taken into consideration by the selection committee.

Important Dates

To review:

  • November 15, 2010: 2010-2011 proposals due; 2009-2010 final reports due
  • December 1, 2010: 2010-2011 awards announced
